Portishead Carnival Committee had to learn a lot in a very short time to put on Carnival 2025, we have walked through the minefields of regulations and legislation now and even though we are currently up to date with legislation, we will add to this page as we learn more
As a way of ‘giving back’ we have produced this page to help all organisers put on a great event.
Admin
The main minefield of putting in any event is the administration, it’s a lot! Especially when you are starting from scratch.
As long as you have a concept, passion and a sense of humour you’ll be just fine!
Fundraising / Accounts
You will need a business Bank account, An accountant or good accounting system.

Licensing

You will need a ‘Street Collection permit’ from your local authority. They are Free of Charge

Your application will need to show dates, locations and you must submit a return to them once you have collected.
Registration
If you are a standard business you will need to register your company with companies house, this is free of charge and fairly straight forward
If you are a charity or committee like us, it is recommended that you register as a CIC - Community Interest Company.
The format of a CIC is the same as a registered company, you will need directors, file confirmation statements and keep on top of your income and expenses

Insurance
As a company / charity / organisation / group you will need Public Liability Insurance to cover your activities this can range from committee meetings in pubs to running a charity from your kitchen table.
Public Liability Insurance is relatively cheap and covers you for a year for all your activities

Design & Promotions
Not all admin is boring admin, designing your logo and working on your website can be a lot of fun
Strongly recommend downloading the Canva app to your device and start playing around with designing logos and flyers etc
